Benefits of Pet Strollers

Pet Strollers Offer Benefits to Both Pets and Owners

Possibly you have seen a person in the park pushing what appeared to be a baby stroller, except it was actually a pet stroller with a dog or cat riding in it. You probably thought the person was an over-zealous pet lover pampering his favorite feline or puppy dog pet. Of course, there are people who like to spoil their pets; however, there are practical reasons for using a pet stroller.

Benefits of Pet Strollers

Strollers have revolutionized how and where pet lovers can take their dogs or cats with them, offering several advantages over standard carriers or leashes. The clearest advantage is that when walking or jogging with your dog, you can more easily push a stroller than risk becoming tangled in a leash or having to struggle with the weight of a handheld carrier.

A pet stroller also creates a buffer zone for passersby, so it helps reduce the possibility of a confrontation with other pets or people walking nearby. While you browse through the mall or take a long walk in the park, your doggie or kitty-cat can relax. Pets feel so secure that they even sleep in their strollers.

Another advantage of using a stroller over using a leash is if your cat or dog is recovering from surgery or suffering with joint or weight problems. A stroller allows them to enjoy being with you in the fresh air without risking further injury. Pet strollers are also an ideal way to take along pets that are unable to walk for some reason. Maybe your beloved pet is elderly or a puppy and tires easily.

Additionally, using a pet stroller allows you to safely take your cat or dog to the veterinarian. If your pet is a cat, which means it doesn't like to travel, placing it in a stroller provides it with a familiar, calming environment. Plus, whether you own a cat or dog, transporting it in a pet stroller makes getting into and out of your vehicle easier. It also keeps your pet safe from other animals.

Types of Pet Strollers

After first being introduced in the Netherlands in 2003, three years later in 2006, pet strollers became the rage among dog and cat owners in the United States. This trendy pet product caused a flurry of competing manufacturers to begin making these handy strollers.

Today a pet stroller is a must-have pet accessory if you own a dog or cat. Following are some of the types of pet strollers available today.

  • Travel strollers - This stroller is perfect for taking your pet with you on day outings or vacations. They are portable and are collapsible in order to fit in the back seat or trunk of your car.Travel strollers normally have standard wheels like baby strollers, except the seats are designed for pets. A zip-up screen or mesh enclosure keeps your pet contained while allowing it to look outside.

A more elaborate model of the travel stroller features car seat that is detachable for use in the car.

  • All-terrain stroller - If you want to use the stroller on surfaces other than concrete and asphalt, you will want to invest in an all-terrain stroller. It easily maneuvers across lawns and grassy park areas as well as gravel or dirt hiking trails. It even navigates sandy beaches with ease. This type of stroller has larger tires and is designed with one tire in the front and two tires in the rear for ease in navigating. An all-terrain stroller has an excellent suspension system so that your cat or dog is not bounced around or shaken when traversing rough terrains.

All-terrain strollers can also offer added features like storage compartments to carry water, pet food, and toys.

  • Bicycle strollers - These strollers are designed to accommodate cyclists whose dogs cannot keep pace with their owner’s speed. It is either a three- or two-wheeled enclosed stroller that hooks to the frame of your bicycle so your dog can come along with you.A bicycle stroller is surrounded with screen to allow your pet a great view and lots of air circulation. Some bike strollers can even be adapted to use without a bike. The size varies dependent on the size of your dog.
  • Double pet stroller - Many pet owners have more than one pet that join their owners on bicycle outings. The double stroller accommodates two dogs, with either one riding above the other or side-by-side. The double stroller is not designed for large dogs but for smaller ones and has four wheels. The individual travel compartments are mailbox-shaped and enclosed with screen or mesh. More expensive models resemble a double baby carriage and have front and top zippers to allow you easy access to your pets.

    • Based on the breed it varies, my Chihuahuas loved it right away, just put their favorite blankie, pillow and toys inside and it’s like a little cozy playland!
Make it fun, put the items above in the stroller and also one treat, once they are placed in the stroller praise them, pet them and give them one more treat.
