What does it do and how does it work?

Many cats react to Matatabi (the vine of the Silvervine plant) even if they show little interest to catnip. A 2017 scientific study found 70% of cats had a reaction to catnip, however over 80% of cats had a reaction to silvervine, with many cats enjoying both!

  • Most cats react with kitten like behaviors such as playing with toys, rolling, rubbing, licking, or catching a case of the zoomies.
  • Other cats will react in more subdued way, becoming more relaxed and chilling out in a dreamlike state.
  • Use a small pinch on a favorite toy, scratching post, or wherever you want to encourage play.

How is it made?

To make our natural Silvervine Powder, we finely grind up the dried gall fruits of an ivy like plant called the Actinindia Polygama that is native to the mountains of Eastern Asia. Although relatively unknown in Northern America, the silver vine plant is more popularly used in Japan and China than traditional catnip among cat owners!

What’s in the tin?

The tin is 1 fl oz and contains 18 grams of silvervine powder.

  • Effects will last anywhere from 5-30 minutes.
  • Cats usually begin to respond when they are past 6 months of age, though some may sooner.
***NOTE*** Not all cats react to the essential oils of each plant in the same way. Which they prefer is based on genetics, their mood, the day, and how they like to play.

After rescuing our current pair of cats (Allister and Cypress), we found that they turned up their nose at all of the catnip and catnip toys that we tried, unlike many of our previous kitties. After much research to satisfy our curiosity, we found out that there are other plants that give similar effects for cats as traditional catnip, but through different essential oils. While not well known here in the USA, many alternatives are popular all over the word and even more popular than catnip in many countries. On our journey we also learned much of what is sold as “catnip” is actually just the catnip stalk and that there was much more to the plant.

In early 2018, we began Meowy Janes from our workshop in New Jersey to help share these many alternatives with the world and educate on how these different plants effect cats. We work with family owned farms and sustainable sources for all of our products. We also hand make a variety of reusable cat toys and carry unique pieces of jewelry for cat lovers.
